Clear waters on the only inhabited island of the Corinthian Sea!
Trizonia is a settlement and island, the largest island of the Corinthian Gulf with an area of 2.5 km2 and the only inhabited island. They belong to the Prefecture of Fokida and together with Spilia and Chania they belong to the Local Community of Trizonia of the Municipal Unit of Tolfonos of the Municipality of Dorida.
There are two prevailing views on the origin of the name. According to the first, the island took its name from the insect of the same name, while according to the second view, it is a corruption of “Trionisia”, a name that described the complex of Trizonia that includes three main adjacent islands (Trizonia, Agios Ioannis and Prasoudi).
Geography
The island is part of a cluster that includes three other smaller uninhabited islands, Agios Ioannis, Planemi and Prasoudi. At its centre dominates the picturesque and sheltered natural harbour, and the settlement, which in recent years has been transformed into a marina for pleasure boats sailing in the Corinthian Sea. Its highest point, Aetorachi, is located at an altitude of about 106 meters from the sea.
The island has three beaches. The largest one, with its reddish sandy beach, is located at “Pounta” 2 km SE of the port. Two more small beaches called “Aspra Chalikia” and “Kapsales” are located on the south and west side of the island respectively, opposite the Peloponnese.
The vegetation of the island includes olive trees, almond trees, vineyards, prickly pears, tree shrubs, dense schist, holm oaks and eucalyptus trees. Because of its particular aesthetic value, it has been classified as a ‘Landscape of Special Natural Beauty’.
